Castles and fortresses
3D magnets and miniatures of the building, knight and dragon characters for children, coins and bells with the crest, a snow globe as the hero. Year-dated pins bring repeat visitors back.
Cathedrals and pilgrimage sites
Plates, bells and thimbles for the traditional buyer; ornaments with stained-glass motifs; postcards and bookmarks at the counter. Quiet designs sell better than loud ones.
Towers and viewpoints
The silhouette on everything: keychains, pins, shot glasses. A "I climbed…" t-shirt with the number of steps is a classic that still works.
Caves and natural sites
Wooden magnets and keychains, enamel mugs, hoodies with the site name, plush of the local animal. Keep it tactile and natural.
Museums
The collection on the product: postcards, tea towels, totes, pins of artworks; the building as a 3D magnet; exhibition editions with dates.
Zoos and aquariums
Plush of the animals in two sizes plus a keyring, stickers, acrylic keychains, pins. Conservation messaging on the tag increases both sales and goodwill.
The exclusivity rule
Whatever the site, the on-site shop should sell at least three products the town shops cannot: the accurate model, the logo edition and the dated edition. Those three justify the visit to the shop and the price.
